About the Thumb
Michigan's
Thumb Area
"Thumb's Up," the sign of A-OK for good times is the theme of the three-county Upper Thumb district, in Michigan's Famous Mitten. This is a rich agricultural area, bounded by the magnificent shoreline of Lake Huron and crisscrossed
by a dozen river systems and spotted with inland lakes.
Shoreline resort towns combine with inland farm communities to offer a big Thumb welcome and friendly hospitality to visitors.
Fishing is enjoyed year - round. Top angler targets include Chinook Salmon, Lake, Brown and Steelhead trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, Large & Small Mouth Bass and perch in Lake Huron and its' fabulous Saginaw Bay. Inland lakes offer Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, and Perch fishing. The area's fields and forested game areas offer excellent small game and bird hunting.
Festivals, museums, fishing contests, winter sports, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are offered in the region along with lakeside resorts, motels, campgrounds and excellent parks.
Highways service the area include the shoreline highway M-25 north of Port Huron and east of Bay City, M-19, M-53, M-24, and M-15 serve northbound (or southbound) travelers while M-46, M-81 and M-142, and excellent hard surfaced county roads serve east - west traffic across the area.
There are activities all year long including great spring fishing opportunities, winter sports and fall color tours. This is one of Michigan's most unique areas, so plan to visit the "Thumb" this year.
