KAYAKERS AND CANOEISTS HAVE A NEW TRAIL TO BLAZE!
Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail officially opened May 20th, 2007 with a gala weekend trail event. The water trail covers 75 miles of Huron County's 92 mile Lake Huron - Saginaw Bay shoreline and approximately 11 miles of Saginaw Bay shoreline in Tuscola County. This trail is the effort of a group of determined local volunteers who picked up the paddle and rowed after the project launched by an institute of higher learning was scuttled when the grant fund pool dried up.
Most of the initial sites in Huron County are at public access facilities such as county or village parks, a state boat launch and a municipal marina. Over the coming year, Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail Inc. will develop its own guidebook and water resistant maps for sale. The guide book will include historic and other information about the communities you are visiting.
There are many things to see and do along the trail. We hope this information will assist you during your visit.
This is a work in progress, so expect to see more access points and better information as Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail evolves.
