Virginia J. Finkel, age 84 of Port Hope, passed away Tuesday September 5, 2017 at Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born June 15, 1933 in Port Hope to the late Gust and Adeline (Eggert) Koglin. She married the late Normal Finkel on November 21, 1953 at St John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. Virginia served for 44 years as secretary for her church at St John.

Bertha June was born on June 9, 1923 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (Stinetz) Carriveau. She married Frederick W. Stroschein on May 4, 1940. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1996. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Anna Viola Kinde Hollister, age 98, of Bad Axe, passed away on December 25, 2017 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe, Michigan. She was the daughter of John and Ida Kinde of Bad Axe. She was the wife of Leland C. Hollister. She was very proud that the Kinde family helped settle the Thumb area. For many years, she worked with her sister and parents in the Kinde Children’s store in Bad Axe. She was also proud of the fact that she helped the Sheltered Workshop become productive. It is now known as Thumb Industries. She started their thrift store and also acquired many contracts for the workers to fulfill. She took no salary. Later she worked with her son, John, at the Tip A Thumb Canoe and Kayak Rental in Port Austin. In her free time she loved to sew. Many people in town have her pillows and potholders made from recycled upholstery fabric. Needless to say, she will be missed.

Charles H. Green, age 102, of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2017, at Meadow Lane Assisted Living under Heartland Hospice care. Charles was born in Elkton, Michigan on May 16, 1915 to the late Thomas and Margaret (Robinson) Green. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1935. Charles married Ruth Nelson on December 2, 1942 in front of the fireplace at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe, Michigan. She preceded him in death in July 12, 2003. Charles served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the 69th infantry, 273rd Regiment as a machine gunner and later a Platoon Sergeant. He was in the Battle of Bulge to the linkup with the Russian Army. He worked as an electrician for Detroit Edison for thirty years, retiring in 1975. Charles was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bad Axe. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #116 in Port Austin, the Disabled American Veterans, and Verona Hills Golf Club.

Jeff Cook, age 58, of Ubly, passed away, suddenly, at home on December 23, 2017. Jeffrey Paul Cook was born on April 5, 1959 in Pontiac, MI, son of Paul and Marjorie (Coventry) Cook. Jeff graduated from Ortonville's Brandon High School in 1977, and continued farming with his family. He was active in 4-H and loved exhibiting at fairs and Holstein shows throughout Michigan. In 1978, he moved with his family to a larger farm in the Ubly area, increased their herd size, and milked their Registered Holsteins for many years, but Jeff, most of all enjoyed the fieldwork. In recent years, he decided to specialize in growing and providing grass and alfalfa hay to other dairy producers and farmers, with good friend Jim Tyrrell and family. Jeff was a great fan of Michigan State Spartan Football, and the Detroit Tigers. He also appreciated watching the Detroit Lions when they played a good game. Jeff enjoyed welding and building, country music, jokes, pizza, beer, attending farm shows, and driving around the thumb, checking things out. Jeff adored his nieces.

He graduated from EPBP Lakers High School in 2006. He was employed at Huron Castings in Pigeon and a member of the Fairhaven Twp Fire Department. If it had an engine he could fix it and make it go fast; he liked boats, cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles.

She graduated from University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s in Science. Beverly was united in marriage to Dr. David Brickel on June 30, 1973 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Beverly was a member of the Bad Axe First United Methodist Church. She loved spending her winters in Florida. She was an avid sports fan, always cheering for University of Michigan football team, the Detroit Lions or the Detroit Tigers. Beverly also enjoyed golfing at Verona Hills Golf Course.

Mabel Irene Sturm, 101, of Pigeon, died Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit. Mabel was born May 31, 1916 at home in Oliver Township to the late Russell and Olga (Fisher) Turner. She graduated from Pigeon High School in 1934. She married Leo Sturm December 25, 1935 at the Pigeon Methodist Church parsonage; he preceded her in death April 25, 1988. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Pigeon Dairy (which she owned), Bella Vista Resort and Pigeon Motors. She was an avid horse woman and as such was the founder and lifelong member of the Indian Trails Riding Club. She was a member of the Pigeon Historical Society and Pigeon First United Methodist Church’s United Methodist Women and the Pigeon Players. She was as comfortable balancing credits and debits as she was winning blue ribbons for racing and square dancing on her horse Sam at the Fair. She was a gifted crafter in crochet, quilting, cooking and a generous volunteer of her time to help others.

Biography

Marvin H. Koglin, 87, of Port Hope, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2017 at Lakeview Extended Rehab in Harbor Beach. Marv was born in Huron Township on July 29, 1930 to the late Gustave and Adeline (Eggert) Koglin. On August 24, 1957, he married the love of his life, Joyce E. Brade at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Kinde. They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Marv was a lifetime dairy farmer. He was a lifetime member of the Farmers Union, and the Michigan Milk Producers. Marvin was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Hope. In his younger years, he was in the Tip of the Thumb Square Dancers Club, he was on the first Zoning Board for Huron Township and he was on the finance committee and ushered at church. When Marv wasn’t farming, he loved to dance, tend to his vegetable garden, play cards with his club, and collected toy tractors, at one point owning more than 300 tractors. He loved his family, making sure his grandchildren’s boyfriends were worthy and loved playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Frances Leone Neville, age 90, of Verona Township, passed away at her home on Wednesday, December 20, 2017. Frances was born in Midland, MI on August 1, 1927, daughter of the late Bert and Anna (Rhode) Tilden. She married Thomas J. Neville on February 17, 1973. Frances worked as a supervisor at Michigan Bell in Saginaw and Consumers Power in Saginaw and then after moving to Bad Axe she worked as a Personnel Assistant for Huron Memorial Hospital. She was a long time member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Saginaw and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. She participated in many church activities. Frances loved to sew and embroider. She especially loved her husband, Tom.

Biography

Faye Marie Scott, 63, of Kinde, passed away on December 19, 2017 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe after battling a long illness. She was born in Bad Axe, Michigan at Hubbard Memorial Hospital on August 9, 1954 to the late John A. Sr. and Fayetta (Fezzy) MacDonald. As a child, Faye loved to spend time on their large family homestead just east of Bad Axe. She loved attending the Huron Community Fair every year, gardening, canning, raising chickens, baking cookies, climbing in the barn, spending close time with her mother, dad, big brother, little sisters, the neighbor kids, pets, and her MacDonald cousins. Faye loved listening to the radio and collecting records when she was young. She also attended Pangborn Country School on the M-19 corner. John Jr. and Faye walked to school from their farm. Faye loved attending the old Bad Axe Junior High too in town. Faye then attended Bad Axe High School, class of ‘73. She sang in choir and spent time with friends. In ‘73 Faye brought home a beautiful baby girl named Marie Elizabeth. A few years later, she received her high school diploma from North Huron High School in the night school program. Faye worked many jobs in her day, including the hospital cafeteria, and her dad’s produce stand. Faye landed her dream job working at Thumb Industries sheltered workshop of Bad Axe. It was the perfect job for her. It was her passion to help the clients in every aspect. Even though Faye was a single mom for many years, she really made Marie’s childhood special. In ‘84 Faye met Jim, out one night with friends. It was meant to be! In ‘85 another bouncing baby girl was born. They named her Shannon Jessie. The doctor said “boy, she sure is a spunky little girl”. So Jim and Faye called her Spunky. During this time Faye became a grandmother to 5 wonderful grandchildren. She loved being a grandmother and spent a lot of time with Chantel, Mathew, Cheyanne and her grand puppies. She really loved her son-in-law’s Gary and Tim too. Faye never had a chance to have a son and she finally did. Faye was a wonderful Aunt, Great Aunt, and Cousin to her family. When Jim was diagnosed with cancer they decided to get married finally. She married the love of her life, James W. Scott, during Christmas time on December 22, 2009. He preceded her in death on September 29, 2012. She was a supervisor at Thumb Industries for 23 years. She enjoyed volunteering in the Special Olympics, helping with the girl’s school activities, playing cards, quilting, sewing, tending to her flower gardens, reading, digging up her family’s ancestry, cooking, baking, cake decorating, bird watching and spending time with her dear family and friends. She loved China King, Diet Coke, and Cheeseburgers from Verona Bar.

Clare W. Finkbeiner, 83, of Elkton, died Monday, December 18, 2017 at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Clare was born April 24, 1934 in Winsor Township to the late Otto and Esther (Geiger) Finkbeiner. He graduated from Pigeon High School in 1952. He married Grace Deming on November 3, 1956 at the Kilmanagh EUB Church. Clare worked as a farming advisor and used farm implement dealer. He was a member of the Elkton Lions and the Hubbard-Winsor Masonic Lodge, Pigeon. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling and golfing.

Biography

Richard D. Korn, 75, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, December 18, 2017. Rich was born on February 24, 1942, in Detroit, the son of the late Edwin and Theresa (Klosowski) Korn. Rich graduated from Port Austin High School in 1960. He married Janice McAleer on February 10, 1973 in Bad Axe. He served in Germany and Washington State in the Army and was honorably discharged in July of 1967. He and his wife both retired from the family business (Formax Manufacturing) in Grand Rapids in 2012 and then moved back to Port Austin. He enjoyed rides in the country, casino trips, gardening, and most of all his grandchildren.

Harold P. Deeg, Sr., age 85, of Unionville, MI passed away December 16, 2017, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe, MI. Harold was born March 29, 1932, in Bach, MI to Paul and Laura (Schulz) Deeg. He is a United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. After the war, he married Beverly Forbing, she preceded him in death. He then married Marcella Meyer, she also preceded him in death. Harold enjoyed farming, being a welder for Michigan Sugar Company, hunting fishing, working on cars, playing cards and being with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Unionville and the Sebewaing American Legion Post # 293 and Sebewaing Sportsman’s VFW Hall.

Mrs. Doreen M. Dickinson, 68 of Harbor Beach, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2017 at her home with her family by her side after a short illness. Doreen was born on April 4, 1949 in Bad Axe to the late John T. and Bertha (Kociba) Bukoski. She married Peter Dickinson on August 2, 2002 in Bad Axe. Doreen attended the St. John Catholic School and was a graduate of Ubly High School. She retired as a Paraprofessional from the HISD in Bad Axe in 2013. She was also a caregiver for residents in the Huron County area. She enjoyed reading, gardening and cooking. She was an avid walker for many years. Doreen cherished time spent visiting with her family, especially her grandchildren.

He graduated in 1956 from Bay Port High School,MI and entered the US Navy, serving two years active duty and then two years reserve. He married Elaine Tanata on May 14, 1960 in Jamestown, North Dakota. He worked at Active Industries then Ford Motor-Steel Division in Dearborn, MI. He moved from Garden City to Caseville Township in 1990. He enjoyed camping and spending winters in Florida.

Leon “Sonny” B. Leigh, 77, of Verona Township, MI passed away on December 16, 2017 at his home. He was born in Paducah, Kentucky on November 11, 1940 to the late Jess and Bonnie (Jackson) Leigh. He moved to Melvindale, Michigan, where he graduated from Melvindale High School in 1958. He is in their Hall of Fame for football and basketball. Sonny served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962. While he was in the Army, he played basketball on special assignment and boxed. He worked for Trans Industries and Vultron, as National Sales Manager, retiring in 2002. When Sonny was younger, he raced snow-mobiles and hunted for pheasants. He enjoyed fishing in his boat; bowling, golfing, basketball, cheering for Michigan State and watching his grandchildren participate in many sports. Sonny was a member of the American Legion in Port Austin, a member of the Moose Lodge and past member of Verona Hills Golf Course. On November 16, 1995, he married Julie Ann Harker in Homes Beach, Florida.

Lloyd R. Nicholas, age 71, of Sebewaing, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2017, at McLaren Bay Region in Bay City. Lloyd was born July 3, 1946, in Gagetown, to Earl and Lola (Ingalsbe) Nicholas. After high school he served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Vietnam War. He then married Paula Buss on July 30, 1966, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sebewaing. He retired from GM in Saginaw. For many years he was a volunteer for the Sebewaing Township Ambulance. Lloyd was a member of the Sebewaing Sportsman’s Club VFW Hall, a Trustee Chair at Trinity United Methodist Church and was a member of the Men’s Group. Lloyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, tending to his pond and lawn, and loved his dogs and cats.
