Biography

Rosemary Grace Armstead (Domenoe) passed away on November 19, 2021 at the age of 88. Rosemary was born on June 12, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to Mary and Burt Domenoe. Rosemary married Raymond Armstead Jr. on February 19, 1977. She was a member of the Elkton Missionary Church. Rosemary lived and worked in Bad Axe, Michigan. She worked at MacDonald’s Food Center for many years and received numerous awards during her tenure. In 1992, Rosemary received the Thumb Industries, INC, Employee of the Year Award. In 2003, she received the Good Citizen Award from Huron County Sherriff, Kent Tibbits. Rosemary was a warm friendly person who loved people. She loved listening to Elvis Presley music. She was a lover of animals, especially cats. The family is very thankful to the staff of the Huron County Public Guardian Office and all the wonderful residents of Bad Axe, Michigan for their unselfish support for Rosemary over the years. She will be greatly missed.

One sister, Arlene McConnell of Cass City, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents - Ray and Myrtle Lane. Son-in-law, Bill Henny. Three brothers and two sisters.

Biography

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Binder, age 100, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday morning, December 30, 2021 and was at home with her family at the time of her passing. She was born on November 27, 1921 in Lincoln Township to Ray and Myrtle (Smith) Lane. She married Wilfred A. Binder on June 28, 1941 in Napoleon, Ohio. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1998. They moved to Sheridan Township in 1948 where she farmed with her husband and son. She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for their farm and for local businesses for nearly 70 years. Betty was a member of The First Baptist Church for 82 years where she served as a children's Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School director and teacher, Youth Group leader and an officer on several church boards. She was also a 4-H Director for 13 years. Betty and her husband were very active members in The Gideon Ministry. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing/embroidery work, reading, traveling, visiting with friends and family. Her door was always open to everyone, and she hosted many dinner parties and celebrations in her home.

Biography

Raymond Charles Heins, 53, of Port Austin died peacefully on Wednesday, December 29th, 2021 after a 14-month battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme (an aggressive brain cancer). He was born on September 9, 1968 in Saginaw, MI. Ray enjoyed nature, gardening, visiting the upper peninsula, his dogs, and classic rock music. He owned and operated Heins Hardware with his wife for 20 years. Ray took great pride in serving the community through his work. In addition to operating the hardware store, he was a master electrician, a locksmith, and generally a jack of all trades. Ray was a faithful member of The River’s Edge church in Caseville, MI for more than 20 years. Ray was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

Mrs. Carol A. Lemke, 79 of Ubly, passed away Monday morning, December 27, 2021 at her son’s house while under hospice care. Carol was born on July 26, 1942 in Tyre, MI to the late Archie and Blanche (Maurer) Rumptz. She married Eugene Lemke on February 24, 1962 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. He preceded her in death on March 31, 2003. She attended a country school and was an eighth grade graduate of St. John Catholic School. Carol then went on to graduate from Ubly High School. She then became employed at Huron Memorial Hospital and was a faithful, dedicated employee for over 38 years. She enjoyed reading and cruising the casinos with her friends. Carol always looked forward to traveling with her family throughout Canada and the United States. Carol cherished time spent with her grandchildren and made sure to attend as many of their sporting events as possible. If you knew Carol, you knew her laugh was infectious, her personality was one of a kind and she will be truly missed by those that knew and loved her.

Biography

Virginia (Ginny) Avis Tageson, 77, of Bad Axe, passed away Monday, December 27, 2021 at Medilodge in Cass City. She was born on October 18, 1944 in Bad Axe to the late Edward and Helen Haller. Ginny graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1962. Following graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Dale Tageson, on October 27, 1962. They celebrated 43 years of marriage before Tom passed away in 2005. Ginny loved reading books, so naturally, her first job was at the Bad Axe Library. Over the years, she became a janitor at the First Presbyterian Church of Bad Axe, where she was an active member. While at the church, she taught Sunday school for primary children for 30 years. She loved children and babysat for many years out of her home. Ginny was also a worthy matron of the order of the Eastern Star-Huronia Chapter 81. In her free time, she was a very talented artist; she painted canvases and ceramics, and attended many nights at Cloud of Dust Ceramics.

He was born on April 25, 1961 in Bad Axe to the late Jerome and Mary (Hitch) Wolschleger. Ray and Connie Tenbusch were united in marriage on July 25, 1981 in Harbor Beach. Ray worked on various farms and enjoyed Tractors. Whether it was fixing them or doing the annual Plowing Bee. He enjoyed gardening, canning and being with his friends and family.

Kevin Scott DeBoer, age 63 of Bad Axe, passed away suddenly on December 26, 2021, and has met his Lord Jesus face to face. He was born on July 11, 1958 in Cadillac, Michigan, the son of Alfred and Doris (Bode) DeBoer. He married Tammy Seibert on July 12, 1980 in Livonia, Michigan. Kevin graduated from Lawrence Technological University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He worked as an automotive engineer for 25 years. Kevin and his family moved to Bad Axe in 1996. He was currently a Bus Driver for Thumb Area Transit. He served his community as a member of the Board of Review for the City of Bad Axe, served as a Scout Master for Troop 555, and served in many areas within his church.

Dean Albert Ellicott, 81,of Owendale, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2021 at home surrounded by family under hospice care. Dean was born August 13, 1940 in Owendale to the late Albert and Ruby (Choate) Ellicott. He married Carol M. Ackerman on June 22, 1963. He worked as a carpenter and roofer. One of his greatest pleasures was riding his horse “Miracle” after a hard day's work or in a local parade. He enjoyed volunteering at Bay Shore Camp, fishing, camping, teasing and laughing with his family. In his younger years he enjoyed snowmobiling with friends, but the past 20 years' winters have been spent in the Florida sun playing shuffleboard.

Larry preceded her in death on January 1, 2010. She worked at Huron Laundry for several years. She enjoyed being with her family and was an avid bingo player.

Marge was born January 24, 1934 in Carsonville to the late Norman and Edith (Thomas) Burger. She married Leroy Gnagey on August 22, 1951 at Pigeon River Mennonite Church; he preceded her in death September 26, 2009. Marge was a member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church. She volunteered as a Meals-on-Wheels driver and at the Scheurer Hospital Gift Shop. She loved cooking and baking for her family and spoiling her family. She always enjoyed her dogs and will be missed by her Pomeranian Marlee.

He and Beatrice Schave were united in marriage on June 30, 1956. She preceded him in death in 2001. Hugh worked as a Truck driver for 40 years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Port Hope, and the AmVets Post of Port Hope. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, travelling, and loved his family, church, and the AmVets.

Dale is survived by his wife Neila; children Jill (Rick) Behm of Illinois and Brian (Allison) of Virginia; grandsons Andrew and Matthew Behm; sister Louanne Sattler of Bay City; brother-in-law Willie Behm and sister-in-law Mary Lou (Bob Jr) Thiel, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Frederick, brother-in-law Gene Sattler and sister-in-law Anita Behm.

Biography

Dale was born March 8, 1947 in Pigeon to the late Floyd and Irma (Jacob) Collison. He graduated from Laker High School in 1965. Dale was drafted during the Vietnam campaign serving a tour of duty in 1967. On July 7, 1973 he married Neila J. Kerr at Pigeon First United Methodist Church. In 2005 Dale retired from Tower Automotive after 40 years' employment. He was active in his community, serving over 20 years of the Pigeon Village Council, Pigeon Farmer’s Festival Committee, Winsor Twp Board of Review. He was a member of the Pigeon VFW and an active member at Pigeon First United Methodist Church.

Alice G. Fisher, 91, of Meade Township, passed away on December 24, 2021 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born in Hume Township on September 12, 1930 to the late Alfred and Minna (Iseler) Witherspoon. Alice married Bernard “Ben” Fisher on April 5, 1951. They raised 6 children together. He preceded her in death on June 6, 2006. She was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church and their Altar Society and the Women’s Auxiliary of American Legion. Alice worked at Huron County Medical Care Facility as a nurse’s aide for many years. She also enjoyed crocheting, quilting, gardening, and canning. She was a dedicated farmer’s wife and helped raised her grandchildren.

Jo Anne lived in many remote areas around the Great Lakes during her childhood as the daughter of a Coastguardsman. Her father’s final duty station being Harbor Beach, MI where she lived until a few months ago. After graduating from Harbor Beach Community High School, she married David Dickinson and moved to San Francisco, California. David was in the US Navy, deployed on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer, during the Korean Conflict. Jo Anne worked as a telephone operator during her time in California. After David returned from the war and was discharged from the Navy, they made their home in Harbor Beach, where they raised their family. In 1992 Jo Anne married Keith Will and they enjoyed many happy years together, until Keith’s death in 2019. Jo Anne had recently moved to Marquette, Michigan where she was better able to enjoy her family’s company.

Stella M. (Ventline) Gorkowski, age 82, passed away peacefully at Meadow Lane Assisted Living under the care of hospice on Thursday, December 23, 2021. She was born September 5, 1939 in Port Austin, Michigan to the late George and Tillie (Fisher) Ventline. Stella and Robert Gorkowski were united in marriage on October 25, 1958 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by Fr. Henry S. Podsaid. They were married 53 years before he preceded her in death. Stella attended Peyok Grade School and graduated from Kinde High School. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality, where she served as treasurer for multiple terms. For many years, Stella donated her time cooking for festivals, funerals, breakfasts, and other special events at the church. In the first half of their marriage, Stella worked side by side with her husband on the farm working the fields and milking cows. She then worked at the Huron Medical Care Facility for 23 years as a cook preparing meals for staff and patients. In her later years, she enjoyed attending Kinde Senior Citizen Club meetings, baking, gardening, and putting together puzzles. She loved to crochet and made multiple afghans for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends, and extended family. Raising her geese was one of her favorite hobbies.

Janice Mae Herron passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2021 after she had taken a fall in November. Daughter of William and Virginia Gierman, Janice was born August 18, 1941 in Cass City, Michigan and she was a graduate of Marlette High School with the class of 1959. Jan married the love of her life, Edward Gordon Herron on May 21, 1960. Originator of Beagio’s Pizza, J & S Catering and Wig Um House & Beauty Salon, Jan was always hard at work. She was also a member of the Lamotte Missionary Church and a devoted member of the FOE 3690 Women’s Auxiliary of Caseville, “Queen Mother” of the Caseville Red Hat Hippers and The Croswell OES 236. Above all, Jan was a friend of all. Wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was loved by everyone she knew. She loved tending to her flowers, watching sunsets at the lake, making delicious homemade wine, shopping, baking, spending time with family and friends, dressing to the nines, as well as decorating. The more “razzel-dazzel”, the happier she was!

Marjorie H. Schwartz, 93, of Gagetown, died peacefully Tuesday, December 21, 2021 in Vadavilla Adult Foster Care of Unionville. She was born July 15, 1928 in Sandusky to Clarence and Nita (Peet) Kreger. She married Donald J. Schwartz on August 21, 1954 in St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. Marjorie graduated from Sandusky High School in 1946. She worked for Detroit Edison Co. in Sandusky and in Caro for twelve years. Following some years spent raising her son, she returned to work as a teacher’s aide. Marjorie retired in the early 1990’s as the secretary of Gagetown Elementary School. Marjorie was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church, did volunteer work for St. Agatha School and was secretary for several pastors. Together, she and her husband Don were proud supporters of the Thumb Octagon Barn. Marjorie loved genealogy and researching her family’s history. She enjoyed working outdoors especially in her flower and vegetable gardens.

She is now a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. She attended Wade School for 8 years. Elaine was a graduate of Harbor Beach High School in 1955. She worked in places such as: Port Austin, Bad Axe, and Ubly at Hamill making seat belts. She enjoyed being with family and friends, going to church events, and loved baking, cooking, gardening flowers, her car and taking care of her cats.
