Alvin is survived by his wife, Jeanella of 62 years; sons Alan (Diane) Long of Elgin, Ill and Donald (Elaine) Long of Bad Axe; daughter Margaret Schwartz of Elgin, Ill; grandchildren Michael, Matt, Megan, Keith, Erik, Steven and Cari; eight great grandchildren, and foster brother Albert Brown. He was preceded in death by a son in law, Al Schwartz; sister Elna Long and foster sister Sophie Degrant.
Alvin L. Long, a lifetime resident of Colfax Township, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Courtney Manor. He was born in Bad Axe on December 29, 1930 to the late Ernest and Myrtle (Smyzer) Long. On September 13, 1952 he married Jeanella MacDonald at the First Baptist Church in Bad Axe. Al graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy. Al was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bradenton, Florida. He served on the Colfax Board of Review, the McDowell School Board and spent 11 years on the Bad Axe Board of Education, six years as president. During this time, the George E. Greene Elementary and Bad Axe Intermediate schools were designed and approved. He resigned in 1972 to supervise construction of the intermediated school and serve as director of building and grounds, a position he has held for twenty years. Al was previously employed as project supervisor for construction companies and was foreman and site supervisor for construction of the Huron County Building, Huron Memorial Hospital and Scheurer Hospital and he also served on the Huron County Board of Commissioners. Al was a hard worker, enjoyed hunting, spending time with his family and friends and worked on the family farm with his son Don and grandson Steve.
