Funeral service will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 22, at St John’s Lutheran Church, Berne, MI. Rev. Steven Neuman, pastor will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Friends and family may call at St. John’s Lutheran Church from 9 AM until the time of services Wednesday. Surviving are children: Sandra (Bill) Renn of Pigeon,MI; Gloria Nieschulz of Pigeon and Dennis (Melissa) Nieschulz of Pinconning, MI; grandchildren, Roger, Marsha, Becky, Sarah, Amy, Carrie, Brian, Ben and Sally; 12 great grandchildren; her brothers, Carl Gerstenschlager, Edwin (Audrey) Gerstenschlager; sisters, Joyce (Jay Dean) Krueger, and Donna Mae Landenburg; sisters-in-law, Myra Gerstenschlager and Jane Bell and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were a grandson, Martin Renn and in-laws, Betty Gerstenschlager and Ralph Landenberg.
Betty L. Nieschulz age 89, of Pigeon, MI passed away Saturday afternoon, March 18, at her home while under hospice care. She was born November 23, 1927 at the home of her parents, the late Carl and Louise (Inhelder) Gerstenschlager in Harbor Beach, MI. She grew up in the Harbor Beach area and attended Zion Lutheran School though the eighth grade and graduated from Harbor Beach High School in 1945. On October 6, 1947, she was united in marriage to Kale Huxtabe at the Lutheran parsonage in Harbor Beach. Kale died 8 months later on May 24, 1948. Betty found the love of her life a short time later, Elmer Nieschulz, they married July 30, 1949 and moved to the Elkton/Pigeon, MI area, in the early 50’s, where they farmed. Elmer died January 29, 2006. In the early 60’s, Betty became a sales clerk at the Pigeon Polewach Store until they closed. From there she was employed at Sageman’s Jewelry Store, Bad Axe,MI retiring in 1983. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Ladies Aide in Berne, MI. Betty enjoyed making quilts, especially for her children and grandchildren.
