Biography

Clarence William Goebel, age 98, of Bad Axe, passed away on December 2, 2016 at Huron Medical Care Facility. He was born on July 18, 1918 in Bach, Michigan to Theodore August and Lydia Errer Goebel. Clarence graduated from Pigeon High School in 1937 and was immediately drafted into the United States Army. World War II broke out the day before he was scheduled to muster out, and Clarence ended up serving four more years in the European Theatre involved in battles in Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, No Appennines, Po Valley. He landed on the beachhead at Anzio and once told of a spontaneous cease fire during the fighting so that both sides could remove their dead. He was awarded Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and four Bronze Battle Stars. After returning to the States, Clarence married Ileen Marie Stiebe on September 13, 1947 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe, where Clarence remained a member until his death. Ileen preceded him in death in 1978. Clarence owned Huron Chevrolet, Cadillac and Oldsmobile Motor Company with his brother, Harold. Clarence and Harold were also distributors for Goebel beer in the Thumb area for many years. In his younger years, Clarence's passions were dancing, golfing, fishing, boating and sampling the beer he was distributing; and in his later years he enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers as well as going to casinos with his significant other Bea Pickla. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the Bad Axe Lions Club.
