Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11 am at St. Hubert Parish-Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Officiating will be Fr. Rob Howe, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe on Friday from 4-8 pm or Saturday at the church from 10 am until the service time at 11 am. A scripture service will be offered on Friday at 7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Steinhardt Family Science Scholarship or to Sacred Heart Church/St. Hubert Parish via the Huron County Community Foundation. Dr. Steinhardt is survived his sister, Irene (Steinhardt) Hedgecock; his children Irene Steinhardt of Las Vegas, NV, Dr. George Steinhardt and his wife Julia of Grand Rapids, MI, Heidi Walker and her husband Keith Walker of Filion, MI, Norma Bour and her husband Dr. James B. Bour of Kalamazoo, MI, and son-in-law James Heasly and his wife Geri of Peyton, CO; his grandchildren, David Heasly, Kristy Walker Treacy, Sarah Walker, Mary Alice Walker, George Steinhardt, Charles Steinhardt, Rebecca (Bour) Eichhorn and James R. Bour; his great grandchildren, Colin, Darby, and Molly Treacy, Owen Bankston, Rose Parker, Jacob Eichhorn; and numerous nephews and nieces. In spirit, he is survived also by his former patients, their families, loving care team, and the people of Huron County, his adopted home. Dr. Steinhardt was preceded in death by his brother George Steinhardt, daughter Christine Steinhardt Heasly; and grandson Edward Eugene Steinhardt.

Biography

Dr. Edward E. Steinhardt, age 98, of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 10, 2017. Dr. Steinhardt was born June 12, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late George F. and Irene (Horn) Steinhardt. He married Alice M. McIntyre on October 21, 1944 at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. Alice preceded Edward in death on March 14, 2006. Dr. Steinhardt graduated in 1937 from Atlantic City High School and later ranked first in his class at Villanova University. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1943, and he interned in Surgery at San Diego General Hospital. After military orientation, Dr. Steinhardt joined a surgical MASH unit in the China-India-Burma campaign where he served until the end of World War II. After the war’s end, Dr. Steinhardt was accepted to a Surgical Residency at Atlantic City General Hospital. Following his Chief Residency year, he located his medical practice in Michigan’s Thumb in 1948. After 20 years of general practice and surgery, he undertook a Urology Residency at Henry Ford Hospital and returned to Bad Axe. He was a Board-Certified Urologist and a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. He was a former president of the Huron County Medical Society and a member of the Michigan State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the North Central Section of the American Urological Association and the American Association of Clinical Urologists. Dr. Steinhardt served on the staff of Hubbard Memorial Hospital and Huron Memorial Hospital and was a former Chief of Staff at Huron Memorial Hospital. Throughout his life, Dr. Steinhardt supported many causes; he and Alice established a science scholarship for the Bad Axe Public Schools in 1977, now in its 40th year. As a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, he served on the Parish Council and the Bishops Council for Vicariate One. He was a member of the Rotary International. Dr. Steinhardt had many interests and hobbies, to include swimming, hunting, cycling, and golfing as a member of the Verona Hills Golf Club for many years. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader.
