The funeral service for Gary will be held on Monday, June 27th at 11:00 AM at the Free Methodist Church of Bad Axe, with Pastor Jerry Sutton and Michael Goforth officiating. Visitation for Gary will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2022 from 2:00-8:00 PM, at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe, and from 10:00 AM until the time of service on Monday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, if you prefer, the family has suggested you contribute to St. Jude Research Hospital, Port Austin Splash Pad (@ Port Austin State Bank) or the American Legion Post 499, in Gary’s name. Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lori, children Jill and Glenn, Jeff and Amy; grandchildren Breyton (Zack Osmond), Colby, Parker, and Griffin. He is also survived by his siblings Sam (JoAnne) Babcock, Dick, Martha Babcock, Evelyn (Steve) Petker, sisters in law Alma Babcock, Mary Ellen Babcock, and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Tom, Matt; and sister in law Jane Babcock, and niece Shari Etzel.
Gary was born on August 13, 1941, in West Branch Michigan, to the late Samuel and Bertha Babcock. He was a Port Austin High School Pirate, graduating in 1959.Gary then went on to spend four years in the Army as a paratrooper. Upon his return, he married Lori Hull in 1968, and they raised two children Jill and Jeff. Gary was a sail maker in Grosse Pointe, worked at Firestone Seat Belt Company in Bad Axe, and started the Buffalo Canvas Co. Gary retired from Dow of Harbor Beach, which allowed deer to cross M-25 safely and save money on car insurance. Gary was one of a kind; generous, a good friend and always around to help someone in need. He was a devoted husband, father and known by many as “Papa”. His greatest treasures are his grandchildren who could do no wrong. He enjoyed golfing and tinkering at his favorite location, the carwash. Gary Babcock, a great Man.
