Visitation will be on Saturday, October 3, from 11 am to 5 pm at the Juengel-Mellendorf Funeral Home, 538 S. Beck, Sebewaing. A private burial service will be held at 6 pm. A memorial service celebrating Karl’s life will be held on Sunday, October 4 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6356 Center Street, Unionville. A luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Christ the King Lutheran School, or the USA Patriot Pride Club. Karl’s family wishes to thank the staff at Heritage Hill assisted living for their tender and thoughtful care during the past two years.
Karl is survived by four children, Judy and Larry Leinweber of Grand Blanc, MI, Gail Waterman of Marfa, Texas, Kurt Ewald and his former wife Lisbeth of Unionville, and Lori and Randy Ettema of Frankenmuth. He also leaves six grandchildren, Mary and Scott Welden, Abbey and Ryan Delaney, Julie and Jason Ruth, Leah, Hannah, and Ethan Ettema, and four great grandchildren, Karle and Kahle Welden and Greta and Lola Delaney. Also a very dear friend, Sherry Liberacki of Unionville. Additionally, he is survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Ewald of Illinois, and Hilda Gremel of Sebewaing. Karl was predeceased by three brothers and a sister, Urban, Bernard, and Norman Ewald, and Lola Harmon.
Karl Richard Ewald died on October 1, 2015 at Heritage Hill Assisted Living in Caro, MI. Karl was born on June 19, 1918 in Unionville Michigan to Gottfried and Mary (Englehard) Ewald. He graduated from Unionville High School in 1936 and was a farmer all of his life. He married Florence Dehmel in Sebewaing on June 5, 1943. She predeceased him on February 26, 1984. Karl lived at home until 2013 when he moved to Heritage Hill Assisted Living in Caro. Karl was very active in his community though church, school, and agricultural organizations. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Unionville serving in numerous roles including treasurer, elder, and congregational chairman. He was a member of the Unionville Board of Education and served as the first president of the Unionville-Sebewaing Board of Education. He was a member of the board of directors of the Sebewaing Beet Growers Association for 16 years, serving as secretary of that organization. He was a member of the board of directors of the Unionville State Savings Bank. Karl and Florence enjoyed traveling and they took farm tours to Europe, Australia, and South America in the 70’s and 80’s. In his retirement, Karl enjoyed crop tours, going to auctions, visiting the Cass City stockyards, collecting antique plat books, and following the Unionville-Sebewaing Patriots, Michigan State Spartans, and the Detroit Tigers.
