Ken is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lenore; children, Daniel Merckel, Denise (Robert) Nitta and Charlene Merckel; grand children, Manon Nitta and Jocelyn Nitta; sister, Kathleen (Michael) Hvizdos; and several nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by a baby girl; aunts, Irene Hart and Henrietta Augustyne; and Uncle, William “Bill” (Marion) Merckel.

Biography

Kenneth Edgar Merckel DDS, age 83 of Mayville, MI passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022 at home with his family by his side. He was born March 24, 1938 in Detroit, MI to the late Edgar and Jean (Augustyne) Merckel. Ken was a graduate of Denby High School with the Class of 1956. He earned his Bachelor Degree at the University of Detroit in 1960. Ken married Lenore O’Leary on June 16, 1962 in Toledo, OH. He went to Dental School at the University of Detroit and earned his DDS in 1965. While attending school, Ken worked as a Bacteriologist and Research Assistant at Henry Ford Hospital. In 1965 he moved to Mayville and opened his dental office where he practiced for 55 years. He always felt he had the best patients in the state. Ken was an avid sportsman and outdoors man. He supported his community, coached little league and the girls traveling softball team. Ken had a passion for the Great Lakes. He was a MSSFA member and was appointed to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. Ken was a voting member of Lake Huron Citizens Fishery Advisory Committee, former member of Mayville Rotary, Lapeer Dental Study Club and American Dental Association and USS Power Squadron. He was a current member of Thumb Charterboat Captain Association and the MSSFA both Thumb and State Chapter where he was a past president and chapter representative.
