Layne learned to play the ukulele at the age of six, and later learned to play the guitar, piano, accordion, and harmonica, he especially loved the guitar. In his youth, he enjoyed smelt and sucker fishing with family and friends at the creek by his grandparent's house on Lake Huron, building snow forts and sledding with his siblings, and cousins next door. Layne enjoyed hunting with his dad, and later hunted in Northern Michigan with friends, and was an excellent marksman.
