Mildred “Virginia” Plevnia, age 89, of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully at her daughter Pam’s home in Arizona on July 11, 2022. She was born on September 20, 1932 in Elkton, daughter of the late Thomas Joseph and Lucy (Bursick) Barry. She married Edward Plevnia, Jr. on September 4, 1954 at St. Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. He preceded her in death on August 10, 2009. Virginia was a 1950 Graduate of Elkton High School. She worked at Bad Axe Grain Elevator where she met Ed. They lived in Bad Axe their whole married life. In 1962, she started work at Huron Memorial Hospital where she worked for over 40 years. She was an active member of the Blue Star Mothers. She was a Eucharistic minister at St. Hubert Parish as well as active with the funeral committee. In the 70’s, she started a girls softball team in Bad Axe. The first night she advertised in the paper to let girls know to show up, she had over 300 little girls that wanted to play. Right then and there, she decided she was going to need some help from other mothers! She then went around to all the stores uptown asking for donations for baseball bats, shirts and hats. This was one of her biggest accomplishments because she loved to play and watch baseball herself. She passed her love of baseball on to her family.
