Funeral Information

Mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday, October 29th at 11 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe with Fr. Robert Howe presiding. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 28th from 4-8 pm at the MacAlpine Mac Chapel in Bad Axe with Scripture at 7 pm and from 10 -11 am on Wednesday, October 29th at the church. Family of the Deceased

Roland is survived by his wife, Arline; one son Timothy J. Symons of Colorado; several nephews and cousins throughout the USA, England and Australia. Also surviving are several stepchildren and step grandchildren. Roland was preceded in death by one brother Earl, two sisters Violet Selby and Frances Mendelssohn.

Biography

Roland J. Symons, 96, of Bad Axe, passed away on October 25, 2014 at Courtney Manor. He was born on January 26, 1918 in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan to the late William H. and Mildred Nee Symons both of Cornwall, England. Roland moved to Grosse Pointe Woods at a young age and resided there until he retired and moved to Huron County. Roland attended public schools and is a graduate of Grosse Pointe High School. He entered into the U.S. Army in 1941 at the outbreak of World War II. He served four and a half years with the Thirty-Second Infantry Division. Two and a half of those years were served as a Sergeant in the South Pacific. During that duty, Roland was awarded the Bronze Star medal. He participated in several major campaigns. Roland suffered from Dingue Fever and recurrent malaria. He was honorable discharged in September 1945 with a disability. In 1947, he became a member of the Grosse Pointe Woods Police Department and retired as a Lieutenant in 1974 after twenty-seven years of service. Roland married Pauline Chase in 1950. They moved to Huron County after retirement in 1974 and resided on a small farm. Pauline passed away in 1983. In 1984, Roland and Mary Hanson were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bad Axe and moved to the Bad Axe area. Mary passed away in June 2005. ON June 2006, Roland and Arline Abraham were united in marriage at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Roland is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W., Fraternal Order of Police, and a member of the Bad Axe Senior Citizens. Roland enjoyed pheasant hunting, bowling, playing cards especially Euchre and spending time with his family and friends.
