A major accessibility upgrade is coming to the Caro Area District Library with the help of $200,000 in federal funding.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the grant this week to replace the library's aging elevator, which has been in service for nearly five decades.
USDA officials say replacement parts for the existing elevator have become obsolete, leaving the system beyond repair. The new elevator will help maintain access to the library's lower level for patrons of all abilities.
The money comes through USDA Rural Development's Community Facilities Program, which helps finance essential facilities and public services in rural communities.
The project has been in the works for some time. Federal records show the 200-thousand-dollar allocation was secured through congressionally directed funding requested by Michigan U.S. Senator Gary Peters.
Library Director Erin Schmandt has said the elevator is critical to keeping the two-level facility accessible and that the modernization should help keep the building functioning for years to come.
