Michigan insurance officials are reminding residents that understanding their health coverage can be an important part of breast cancer prevention and treatment.
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services says consumers should check what their plans cover for mammograms, diagnostic testing and cancer treatment.
The American Cancer Society estimates more than 9,900 new breast cancer cases will be diagnosed in Michigan this year, with about 1,320 deaths.
Under Michigan law, insurers are required to provide coverage for certain breast cancer diagnostic, outpatient treatment and rehabilitation services. DIFS also says many preventive screenings are available without copays or deductibles, although consumers should confirm the details of their individual plan before scheduling care.
Anyone facing a denied claim or questions about coverage can contact DIFS for assistance. The department's consumer hotline is 877-999-6442 and is available weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
