The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in Washington passed the Protecting Our Infrastructure of Pipelines and Enhancing our Safety also known as "PIPES" Act of 2016, which included two provisions requested be added by Congress Woman Candice Miller to improve pipeline safety throughout the Great Lakes region. Miller applauded its passage saying "the Great Lakes, which have been one of my principal advocacies throughout my tenure in Congress. They are an invaluable national asset, containing one-fifth of the world’s fresh surface water and 95 percent of the nation’s freshwater supply." the PIPES Act require the Secretary of Transportation to designate the Great Lakes as USA ecological resources, which will require the implementation of more stringent pipeline integrity management practices. A video of Millers comments to her colleagues can be found in the video.
