There was almost too much to see, do and enjoy. But, that's what made the Huron Intermediate School District's first annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math...or STEAM...showcase a huge success with the visitors.
The event, which filled both gyms and a good portion of the hallway and classroom space in the Bad Axe Middle School, got underway at 10 am Saturday. There were activities, demonstrations and presentations for kids and adults. The Ubly and Bad Axe High School jazz bands provided musical entertainment. Students demonstrated small and simple to large and talented robots which they had built. A 3-D printer turned plastic into gears which were assembled into mechanical demonstrations. Major sponsors such as DTE Energy , Dow AgroSciences Harbor Beach, NextEra Energy Resources, ITC, Team One Credit Union, in addition to many other attendees handed out everything from pens to popcorn, hosted wind park tours. Author Jonathan Rand was on hand autographing his books.
Cool weather may have accounted for the slow start in attendance, but before long the parking lots and the school was filled with families. Students at virtually all grade levels took active rolls in demonstrating and explaining their projects and in some cases like the Bad Axe Schools Destination Imagination, a history of their young organization's past and present projects. Outdoor inflatables for kids to burn off excess energy and the Maplewood Petting Zoo, Sluicing for Gemstones, Chef Cool from the Midland Center for the Arts, nature displays, even a digital dome planetarium presentation were available. Suffice it to say...it was apparent a good time was had by all.
