THE HURON AREA TECHNICAL CENTER WAS BUZZING WITH PEOPLE TUESDAY AFTERNOON DURING AN OPEN HOUSE SHOWCASING ALL THE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION CENTER HAS TO OFFER.    THE MAIN HALLWAYS OF THE BUILDING WERE LINED WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF COLLEGES AND BRANCHES OF THE MILITARY TO ENGAGE THE STUDENTS IN TALK ABOUT THEIR FUTURE, SPARKING THOUGHTS OF WHAT THEY WANT TO DO AND HOW TO GET THERE.   ALL THE WHILE UNIFORMED MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL'S LAW ENFORCEMENT CLASS PATROLLED THE HALLWAYS.   KIM SHADD INSTRUCTS THE SCHOOL'S INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS CLASS.    SHE SAYS THE COURSE IS PERFORMED ENTIRELY ON COMPUTERS WHICH STUDENTS USE TO STUDY BUSINESS, ACCOUNTING, AND EVEN GRAPHIC DESIGN.     SCHADD SAYS WHEN A STUDENT GRADUATES THE CLASS THEY ARE "MICROSOFT OFFICE" CERTIFIED WHICH WILL GIVE THE STUDENT A LEG UP OVER THE COMPETITION WHILE LOOKING FOR A POSITION AT PLACES LIKE OFFICES, BANKS, AND MOST DESK JOBS.
THE "MAIN STREET CAFE" IS THE SCHOOL'S VERY OWN RESTAURANT, RUN ENTIRELY BY STUDENTS, FROM COOKING TO SERVING.   THE HOSPITALITY-FOOD SERVICE CLASS INSTRUCTOR JOHN MILES SAYS THE CAFE SERVES STUDENTS MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY AND WELCOMES THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO COME EAT TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS FROM 12-NOON TO 1:30.    THE CAFE NOW EVEN RUNS ITS OWN CATERING SERVICE.     MILES SAYS DURING THEIR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN BOTH SERVING AND FOOD PREPARATION, THOUGH BY THE END OF THE YEAR; A STUDENT WILL TYPICALLY FAVOR A CERTAIN ASPECT OF THE PROGRAM, BE IT HOSPITALITY, BAKING, GRILLING OR ANYTHING ELSE.     AFTER THE 2ND YEAR OF CLASSES STUDENTS ARE "SERVE SAFE" CERTIFIED.     THE CAFE'S KITCHEN WAS REFURBISHED ROUGHLY 5 YEARS AGO.     MILES SAYS THE CAFE CREATES REVENUE IN MORE THAN ONE WAY, ASPIRING FOOD INDUSTRY ENTREPRENEURS COME TO RENT TIME WITH THE KITCHEN'S INCUBATOR TO TEST THEIR NEW FOOD IDEAS.
ALSO SERVING THE PUBLIC DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTOR SHARON ABBOTT SAYS THEIR FULL SERVICE SALON IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FROM 8:30 IN THE MORNING TO 3:00 IN THE AFTERNOON.    SHE SAYS 11TH GRADE STUDENTS WILL MOSTLY STUDY THEORY AND ANATOMY FROM BOOKS, GETTING PRACTICE CUTTING HAIR ON MANIKINS; WHILE THE SENIORS RUN THE SALON.     SHE SAYS SHE LOVES WATCHING HER STUDENTS PRIDE IN THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS THEY GROW AND MATURE.
TIM GUIGER TEACHES CONSTRUCTION BUILDING TECHNOLOGY, WHERE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT BUILDING HOMES FROM THE FOUNDATION UP TO THE SHINGLES.     THE CLASS COMPLETES ONE HOUR OF BOOK WORK A WEEK TO LEARN TERMINOLOGY AND THEORY, THEN SPENDS THE REST OF THE WEEK HANDS ON COMPLETING BUILDING PROJECTS, AND LEARNING ABOUT EQUIPMENT AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY TECHNIQUES.
KRISTOFER MERLINGTON, A CURRENT STUDENT OF THE CLASS: MECHANICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING AND DESIGN SAYS THE CLASS WORKS A LOT ON COMPUTERS, USING A COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING AND DESIGN PROGRAM, ALSO KNOWN AS "C.A.D.D.".   THE PROGRAM ALLOWS STUDENTS TO CREATE BOTH TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONAL SKETCHES OF OBJECTS THEY MAY MAKE LATER ON IN THE CLASS.     MERLINGTON TALKED ABOUT THE VARIOUS REMOTE CONTROLLED VEHICLES IN THE CLASS.   HE SAYS THE STUDENTS WERE GIVEN A $600 NITRO R-C CAR AND $2,000 DOLLARS WITH THE OBJECTIVE BEING TO CONVERT IT FROM NITRO POWER TO ELECTRIC POWER.    MERLINTON ESTIMATES THE ONE HE HAD BEEN WORKING ON CAN MOVE FROM ZERO TO SIXTY MILES PER HOUR IN ROUGHLY THREE SECONDS.
THE POWER TECHNOLOGY CLASS TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO WORK WITH EVERYTHING POWERED BY AN ENGINE EXCEPT CARS, WHICH IS COVERED IN THE SCHOOLS AUTOMOTIVE COURSE.     THE POWER TECH STUDENTS WORK WITH HEAVY ENGINES AND WEED WHIPPERS ALIKE WHILE ALSO PRACTICING WELDING. THEY ARE PRACTICALLY AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE EXCELLENCE CERTIFIED BY THE TIME THEY GRADUATE, NEEDING ONLY ACTUAL WORK EXPERIENCE.      INSTRUCTOR GARY GLINIECKI SAYS HE LEARNED DURING A CLASS TRIP TO THE GEMINI GROUP FACTORY, HURON COUNTY NEEDS MORE SKILLED MECHANICS.     GEMINI GROUP IS AN INTERNATIONAL PLASTICS AND METALLICS COMPANY.
THE EARLY CHILDHOOD PROFESSIONS AND EDUCATION CLASS TEACHES STUDENTS MORE THAN JUST CARING FOR YOUNG CHILDREN.     THE CLASS IS FOR LEARNERS INTERESTED IN STUDENT PSYCHOLOGY, PATHOLOGY, SPECIAL EDUCATION, SOCIAL WORK, AND MORE.    PRESCHOOLERS DO STAY IN A ROOM ATTACHED TO THE CLASSROOM AND ARE OFTEN ATTENDED BY THE 1ST YEAR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, 2ND YEAR STUDENTS WILL FOCUS MORE ON THEIR SPECIFIC AREA OF INTEREST IN EDUCATION.    FIRST YEAR STUDENTS CHOOSE ONE PRESCHOOLER TO WORK WITH MOST SPECIFICALLY AND CREATE A PORTFOLIO ON THE CHILD'S SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT STAGES AND CHARACTERISTICS WHICH IS LATER PRESENTED TO THE FAMILY.
THE SCHOOL ALSO OFFERS HEALTH SCIENCE COURSES TEACHING SKILLS FOR NURSES, PHYSICIANS, AND VETERINARIANS.     THE STUDENTS ALSO GET TO WORK HANDS ON WITH DUMMIES AND SOMETIMES BY CONDUCTING CHECKS FOR THINGS LIKE BLOOD PRESSURE ON LIVING PEOPLE.
THE TECH CENTER'S MARKETING PROGRAM HAS SEEN SOME RECENT AND EXCITING SUCCESS.    FIVE STUDENTS ARE RAISING MONEY AND BEEFING UP A PRESENTATION TO TAKE TO NATIONAL COMPETITION BEING HELD IN ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA.   THE CLASS TEACHES STUDENTS ABOUT ENTREPRENEURIAL, MARKETING, AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS.    INSTRUCTOR; AMBER BLACKSTOCK DESCRIBES THE EXPERIENCE AS SIMILAR TO THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA, BUT MARKETING ORIENTED.     THE CLASS WON STATE COMPETITION WITH A PRESENTATION THEY PUT TOGETHER ON SMALL BUSINESS, OF THE CLASS FIVE STUDENTS WERE CHOSEN TO PRESENT IN CALIFORNIA.    BLACKSTOCK SAYS THIS YEARS THEME IS PROMOTION.      THE PRESENTATION IS MADE UP OF PICTURES AND WRITTEN REPORTS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS, LIKE HELPING McDONALDS FOOD AND FAMILY CENTER IN BAD AXE PROMOTE THEIR "COUNTRY DAYS".    THE REPORT IS ALSO FILLED WITH SCHOOL OUTREACH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS THE CLASS HAS COMPLETED.      TO VIEW A NARRATIVE SLIDE SHOW ABOUT THE HURON AREA TECH CENTER OPEN HOUSE, CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW.
