A LATE AFTERNOON FIRE DESTROYED WHAT NEIGHBORS RUMORED TO BE A "KNOWN DRUG HOUSE" NEAR DOWNTOWN CARO, THURSDAY.
CARO FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO THE 300 BLOCK OF EAST FRANK STREET AT ABOUT 5 PM, AFTER SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM THE SMALL HOME. CASS CITY, FAIRGROVE, MAYVILLE, KINGSTON, AND VASSAR FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO ASSIST.
HEAVY SMOKE COMING FROM ALL IMMEDIATELY VISIBLE WINDOWS BLANKETED THE AREA. FIREMEN WARNED BYSTANDERS THE SMOKE COULD BE TOXIC. AT ONE POINT, IT APPEARED THE FIRE WAS UNDER CONTROL WHEN FLAMES SUDDENLY ERUPTED FROM AN EAST SIDE WINDOW SHORTLY BEFORE 6 P.M.
NEIGHBORS TOLD WLEW NEWS THEY WERE GLAD NO ONE WAS APPARENTLY INJURED IN THE BLAZE BUT THEY WERE EQUALLY GLAD THE HOUSE WAS DESTROYED. THEY CLAIMED CARO POLICE WERE AT THE HOME " ALMOST WEEKLY OVER DRUGS." THEY WERE UNSURE OF THE NAMES OF ANY OCCUPANTS BUT SOME SAID THERE WERE A LOT OF COMINGS AND GOINGS AND ONE ESTIMATED THAT UP TO 15 PEOPLE MAY HAVE STAYED THERE ON OCCASION.
CAUSE OF THE FIRE AND WHETHER THE BUILDING WAS INSURED WERE NOT IMMEDIATELY KNOWN.    CARO FIRE CHIEF RANDY HECKROTH SAYS THE FIRE APPEARED TO HAVE STARTED IN THE BASEMENT, BUT BECAUSE OF LOW LIGHT CONDITIONS THE INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO THE MORNING.     HECKROTH SAYS DESPITE THE FACT THE STRUCTURE IS STILL STANDING THE HOME WAS A TOTAL LOSS HAVING BEEN HEAVILY CHARRED FROM SMOKE.    THE FAMILY HAS BEEN DISPLACED AND WILL RECEIVE ASSISTANCE FROM THE AMERICAN RED CROSS FOR THE TIME BEING.
