A HOBBY, THAT TURNED IN TO A PASSION RESULTED IN WHAT CAN ONLY BE CALLED AN ARCHIVE OF HURON COUNTY'S MUSICAL HISTORY FOR HALF OF THE LAST CENTURY.   KARL BYARSKI OF KINDE WILL TURN 98 LATER THIS SUMMER AND HAS BEEN COLLECTING NOT ONLY MUSIC BUT SOUNDS SINCE GETTING HIS FIRST TAPE RECORDER. WE ASKED HIM HOW HE GOT STARTED...

IT BEGAN WITH A TAPE RECORDER FROM MONTGOMERY WARD'S CATALOG AND LATER HE PURCHASED MORE PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT AND MICROPHONES.   MANY TELEVISION SHOWS WERE LOST WHEN NETWORKS REUSED TAPE AND WE WONDERED WHY HE KEPT ALL RECORDING HE MADE....

WHAT HE HAS COMPILED IS IN EXCESS OF 650 REEL TO REEL TAPES, 2 THOUSAND CASSETTE TAPES, 600 CD's AND 400 COMMERCIALLY PRODUCED ALBUMS. WHILE HIS MOBILITY HAS BEEN REDUCED, HE STILL RECORDS TO THIS DAY USING HIS HOME COMPUTER. THE ARCHIVE HAS NOT GONE UNNOTICED. DAVE LANGDON HAS BEEN SEARCHING FOR SUCH PRESERVED HISTORY AND TOLD US THAT USUALLY HE GETS A PERSON WITH MAYBE A DOZEN OR SO TAPES, NOTHING LIKE HE FOUND WITH KARL. INTEREST IN HIS COLLECTION IS NOT CONFINED TO LANGDON, AS BYARSKI HAS LETTERS FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MUSEUM INTERESTED IN EXPLORING WHAT HE HAS. IN THE EARLY DAYS OF WLEW HE HAD A SHOW ON THE AIR CALLED HOMETOWNERS, AND SOME OF THOSE ARE PRESERVED AS WELL. HE ALSO RECORDED OTHER THINGS, IN FACT IN THE EARLY 1950'S HE RECORDED AN ACCOUNT FROM SURVIVORS OF THE 1890 GREAT FIRE BEFORE THEY PASSED AWAY. MSU MUSEUM IS SCHEDULED TO GIVE KARL A MICHIGAN HERITAGE AWARD LATER THIS SUMMER FOR HIS PRESERVATION WORK. THERE WILL ALSO BE A GATHERING FOR KARL ON JUNE 29th FROM 2 UNTIL 5PM AT THE AMERICAN LEGION HALL IN PORT AUSTIN, IT WILL FEATURE PICTURES AND MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT AND LIGHT REFRESHMENTS. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO TURN OUT.
