The Bay County Sheriff's Office reports its Rescue Team has responded to more than a dozen ice-related emergencies in recent months, assisting several people safely off unstable ice and away from open water.
Officials say the department's airboat has been a critical resource during these incidents, allowing crews to reach individuals quickly when time is limited.
With fluctuating temperatures creating unpredictable ice conditions, authorities are reminding residents that no ice should be considered completely safe. Weather changes, warming trends, currents, and pressure cracks can quickly weaken surfaces that may have previously appeared solid.
The Sheriff's Office is urging the public to use extreme caution when venturing onto frozen lakes, rivers, and ponds, emphasizing that the risks to both individuals and first responders are significant.
Officials also expressed appreciation for neighboring agencies that have assisted with the increased number of rescue calls.
