A federal funding boost is headed to Saginaw to strengthen local efforts aimed at reducing youth violence and expanding mentorship opportunities.
U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet visited the city Thursday to announce $700,000 in support for the H.E.L.P. Community Violence Intervention Program. The funding is intended to expand services that focus on early intervention, youth engagement, and community-based prevention strategies.
Speaking during a roundtable discussion at Thompson Middle School, McDonald Rivet emphasized the importance of investing in young people rather than leaving them to navigate challenges alone. She described the funding as part of a broader commitment to creating safer neighborhoods while giving children the tools they need to succeed.
H.E.L.P., a community-driven initiative, works to curb gun violence by pairing young people with mentors, offering skill-building programs, and collaborating with local law enforcement. Program leaders say reaching youth early is key to helping them build emotional awareness, self-control, and a sense of belonging within the community.
The organization also promotes "safe zones" in participating neighborhoods. Green-painted curbs and posted signage signal areas where residents are actively working together to discourage violence and support positive development.
Program officials say the new funding will allow them to deepen outreach and extend services to more families across Saginaw.
