Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says she will continue challenging major utility rate hikes after DTE Energy announced plans to seek another electric increase just five days after regulators approved a $242.4 million hike.
DTE filed notice with the Michigan Public Service Commission on February 24, saying it expects to formally submit the new request in late April. The company has not disclosed how much it plans to seek. In its last case, DTE requested $574 million - an 11 percent residential increase - before the commission approved a smaller amount.
Since 2020, regulators have authorized more than $1 billion in annual revenue increases for DTE. Nessel argues repeated rate cases are straining customers and says her office will intervene in all major proceedings.
Several cases remain pending, including DTE's natural gas request and electric and gas rate hikes from Consumers Energy. Nessel is also asking regulators to reopen approval of special contracts tied to a proposed AI data center in Saline Township, saying customers must be protected from subsidizing those costs.
