Republican gubernatorial candidate Aric Nesbitt introduced a new economic platform this week that calls for eliminating the state income tax, scaling back regulations, and expanding skilled trades opportunities across Michigan.
Speaking at a campaign event in Paw Paw, Nesbitt said Michigan is lagging behind faster-growing states and argued that significant policy changes are needed to reverse the trend.
Under his proposal, Nesbitt would seek to phase out Michigan's income tax and reinstate right-to-work policies. He also announced plans to create a new state office - the Michigan Financial Accountability and Fiscal Oversight Office - aimed at identifying and reducing what he describes as wasteful government spending.
The plan also emphasizes workforce development. Nesbitt is proposing expanded scholarships for apprenticeships and training programs tied to high-demand and emerging industries, with the goal of strengthening Michigan's skilled trades pipeline.
On education, the proposal includes opting into federal school choice scholarship programs supported by President Donald Trump and prioritizing efforts to boost early reading proficiency statewide.
Nesbitt said the agenda is designed to improve the state's business climate and create long-term economic growth for families and small businesses.
