The Davison Township Board of Trustees is mulling whether or not to remodel its current hall or to build a new one along with an attached police station.
The township has 40 acres that would accommodate the proposed construction of new facilities.
Officials have been working with Gazall Lewis & Associates Architects to determine if building a new combination facility would be the best option for the township or do a remodel and to add on a police station.
After studying the issue, building a new combination facility would be the best option.
A preliminary estimate is that it would cost about $15 million to renovate the current hall that was built in 1980 and to add on a police station at 1280 North Irish Rd.
Complicating doing that is a hill on the property. Adding on a police station would utilize some of the Veteran Park.
It is estimated building a new hall and police station off of Davison Road would cost about $11.3 million.
A new facility would be Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and have updated security, which the current facility does not have.
If the plan for a new hall with a police department moves forward, it would be paid for by bonding the cost over a 20 to 25 years so it would not require a tax increase.
It was noted that doing renovations to the current hall would just be a Band-Aid approach and not address all of the issues and needs.
Exploring construction of a new hall with an attached police department started several years ago under a different township board, but was set aside.
