Saginaw police say a disturbing vulnerable adult abuse case has led to criminal charges after a woman was allegedly held captive for years.
Officers were called to the 1600 block of Gilbert Street on March 15th after a report of property damage. When they arrived, they found a 58 year old woman who said she had just escaped from a nearby home. Investigators say she had been confined in a basement for about two years, with limited food and water and little access to basic sanitation. She told police she broke a window to get attention and trigger a call for help.
The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities say the investigation led to charges against the victim's 48 year old sister in-law, who had been acting as her caretaker. She is now charged with unlawful imprisonment and first-degree vulnerable adult abuse. The suspect has been arrested and is being held in the Saginaw County Jail.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, with additional court proceedings pending.
