Caro, Michigan - Public transportation in the Caro area is set for a major transition, as the Caro Transit Authority prepares to take over operation of the Thumbody Express bus system later this year. The move comes after the Human Development Commission announced it will discontinue its transit services by September 30, 2026, or earlier if a new provider assumes control.

Transit authority officials say service and fares are expected to remain stable for riders in Caro, Indianfields Township, and Almer Township during the changeover. The Human Development Commission, which has managed the system since the 1980s, cited ongoing partnership challenges and limited resources in its decision to step away.

As part of the transition, current transit employees are expected to be offered positions with the Caro Transit Authority. However, some adjustments are already being made, including the temporary suspension of certain long-distance, non-emergency medical trips due to high operating costs.

Looking ahead, the transit authority plans a broader review of routes, fares, and equipment, including the potential use of smaller vehicles to better match ridership. Officials also note the system will need a new operations site, as current facilities are tied to the Human Development Commission, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining reliable transportation access for the community.
