Michigan health officials are encouraging students preparing for careers in addiction treatment to apply for a state-funded internship stipend program aimed at strengthening the behavioral health workforce.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is accepting applications through June 15 for the Michigan Opioid Treatment Access Internship Stipend Program. The initiative provides financial support to students completing unpaid internships tied to careers in substance use disorder treatment.
Eligible students pursuing degrees in social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, nurse practitioner programs, or physician assistant studies may qualify for stipends of up to $20,000, based on internship requirements. Recipients must agree to provide substance use disorder treatment services in Michigan after graduation.
State health leaders say the program is part of a broader effort to expand access to opioid treatment and recovery services while addressing workforce shortages in the field.
MDHHS has dedicated $3.5 million to the program, with funding coming from the Michigan Opioid Healing and Recovery Fund. Officials estimate the investment could assist as many as 350 students statewide.
Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited program, complete an online application, and submit required documentation by June 15. Acceptance notifications are expected within seven weeks of the deadline.
