State Representative Joseph Pavlov has backed legislation aimed at reducing delays for Michigan residents seeking disability parking placards and related permits.
The measure would restore the authority of certified nurse practitioners to sign applications for disability parking placards, special registration plates, and free parking stickers. Physical therapists and occupational therapists would also be permitted to complete the required documentation.
The proposal follows a recent policy change by the Michigan Secretary of State that prevented nurse practitioners from signing the forms, resulting in longer wait times for some patients.
Pavlov says nurse practitioners routinely evaluate disabilities and often serve as a patient's primary healthcare provider, particularly in communities facing physician shortages. Supporters argue the change would streamline the application process, improve access to accommodations for residents with disabilities, and reduce administrative burdens on physicians.
The legislation received bipartisan approval in the Michigan House and now moves forward for additional consideration.
