Selma Alice Schulz, age 85, of Deckerville, passed away at her home on December 30, 2018. Selma was born July 3, 1933, in Bach, Michigan, to Paul and Laura (Schulz) Deeg. After graduating High School, she worked in home healthcare for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, Werner Schulz, Sr. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cass City, where she served on the Alter Guild and was a past choir member. Selma was an avid gardener, enjoyed taking care of poultry, and liked quilting and sewing.

He was born on July 29, 1940 in Bad Axe, son of the late Howard & Erna (Engler) Ritter. He married Marie Wasielewski on June 29, 1963. He worked 42 years at Active Industries. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, woodworking and was a member of the Knights of Columbus since December 6, 1981.

Carl Binder, age 93, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Carl was born September 5, 1925 in Bad Axe, son of the late Elmer and Clara (Isler) Binder. He married Wanda Sparling on July 31, 1948 at the Bad Axe First Baptist Church. She preceded Carl in death on December 4, 2015. Carl fought with the U.S. Army in WWII in the Pacific Campaign. He was a Sigel Township farmer all his life and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of farming with his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. After retiring from farming, he worked for McDonalds Food and Family Center. He was a member of Bad Axe First Baptist Church.

Marjorie and Allen Woodward were united in marriage on June 14, 1952 in Lansing. He preceded her in death on April 28, 2011. Marjorie was the Port Hope Village Clerk for many years, was a member of the Port Hope United Methodist Church, and enjoyed travelling and gardening.

Donald R. Landenberg Sr., age 82, of Bad Axe, passed away on December 22, 2018 at McLaren Thumb Region Hospital in Bad Axe. Don was born in Harbor Beach, Michigan on October 23, 1936. His parents were the late Carl and Dorothy (Mattice) Landenberg. Don was in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 on the German-Russian border. On December 31, 1960, he married the love of his life, Violet McNeil. She preceded him in death in 1997. Donald was a member of the Victory in Christ Community Church in Bad Axe. He worked at Active Industries in Elkton from 1955 to 1992. Don enjoyed auto racing. He would race one night at Thunder Road in Cass City then the next night at the Owendale track. In his spare time, Don liked to do woodworking, making birdhouses, fishing and hunting.

He preceded her in death on July 19, 2002. Lila was a graduate of Cass City High School. She worked for Hubbard Bank, Community Bank and First National Bank in Bad Axe. She was the first retiree of First National Bank in 1988. Lila was a parishioner of St. John Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Ubly and was a member of the Christian Mothers. Lila loved to bowl and was a former member of Stingers for Zingers bowling team and the Whitey’s Tuesday Night Bowling League. She enjoyed dancing, baking, golfing, traveling and spending time with family and friends

Biography

Theodore “Ted” Henry Falkenberg, 76, of Harbor Beach, MI went to his heavenly home on December 21, 2018 while vacationing with his wife in Gulf Shores, AL. Ted was born in Cadott, WI to Theodore and Vlasta on February 12, 1942. He grew up on the family farm where he found his fondness of gardening and beekeeping. His love of teaching began when he started walking to his one room schoolhouse, Eleanor, uphill both ways in first grade. He always made sure to tell everyone that he got to skip kindergarten. He graduated from University of Wisconsin – River Falls with a bachelor’s in education and completed his Master of Education at Michigan State. He married Mary Teal on June 19, 1965 in Romeo, MI. He taught high school science and agriculture for 30 years in Coopersville, Harbor Beach, and Port Hope, MI. Ted was happiest when he worked and shared his honey, vegetables, and fruits of his labor. He and Mary enjoyed traveling to spend time with family. He was proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He was involved in his church choir, elder, a former Sunday school teacher, and part of the Lutheran Laymen’s League at the local and MI District level. He loved being part of the Lion’s Club, Jaycee’s, and Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel member.

She was born Friday, January 6, 1967 in Edina, Minnesota, to Sharon Meester and the late Dennis Huggett. Krystine married Brad Yocca on November 25, 1995 in Parker, Kansas. Krys was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, and friend to many. She was an avid runner and never turned down an opportunity to run on the trails with her best friends (and her dogs Jake and Buck of course) which often led to participating in many marathons. When not running, you could find Krys watching a baseball game, either cheering on her two boys (often found sitting next to the dugout as the team scorekeeper) or rooting for her favorite professional team (the Detroit Tigers). Krys loved spending time at her Lakehouse where she was able to watch great sunrises, listen to the sound of the waves, enjoy fires on the beach and spend time with her family, which to her was the most important part of her life.

Red was born November 20, 1933 in Brookfield Twp to the late Fred and Myrtle (Strauch) Wissner. He graduated from Owendale High School and served in the US Army. He married Dorothy (Kosinski) Fisher on February 1, 1964; she preceded him in death February 21, 2003. Red retired as a truck driver and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parrish. He was an active and passionate supporter of the Lakers Athletic Boosters.

Jenny was born January 29, 1924 in Pigeon to the late Joseph and Emma (Albrecht) Shetler. She graduated from Pigeon High School and Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit. GORDON A. SANNER, age 99 of Harbor Beach, MI passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on December 30, 1918 in Harbor Beach to the late William A. & Jennie (Fyfe) Sanner. He graduated from Harbor Beach High School in 1937. Gordon served in the US Army Air Force during World War II, from 1940-1945, where he earned a Good Conduct Medal, five Overseas Service Bars, American Defense Service Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and one Service Stripe. He married Margaret Elizabeth Frindt on October 5, 1957 in Harbor Beach. He worked for the local Ford dealership until he retired. He was a active lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, and a member of the Port Hope Retirees.

Carole Jean Wilde, age 72, of Bad Axe, received her angel wings on December 16, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s and cancer. She was born in Harbor Beach to the late Mabel Laskey and Herbert Anderson. Carole attended Our Lady of Lake Huron and Harbor Beach Public Schools, where she twirled a mean baton as a majorette and member of the “Pirates” drill team. Carole married Charles (Charlie) Wilde on June 18, 1966. Carole loved her nursing career, dogs and cats, traveling with Charlie, lunches with friends, and the thrill of calling out “Bingo”.

Doris was born August 27, 1933 in McGregor, Michigan to the late Ollie and Jessie (Waun) Scott. She married S. Anthony “Whitey” Zdrojewski on June 13, 1953 at St. Patrick’s of Palms. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2015. Doris was a graduate of the Country School. She was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Palms since 1953. She farmed with her family and was a dietician at Deckerville Community Hospital for over 30 years. She enjoyed camping, music, dancing to polkas, cooking, playing cards, visiting with family and friends and bowling at Gillis’ Bar in Minden City.

Mrs. Charlene Patricia Bensinger quietly left us Sunday night, December 9, 2018 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living in Bad Axe. She was born on February 11, 1929 to Bertha and Freeman Motz. She married Gordon L. Bensinger on June 9, 1956 at the Elkton Evangelical United Brethren Church in Elkton, MI. He preceded her in death in March 26, 2003. Together they raised one daughter, Karen and welcomed her husband, Daniel as their son. Charlene was a graduate of Elkton High School. She worked for many years at the Bad Axe ASC office before staying home to raise their daughter. In 1976, she and her husband opened Buds and Blossoms Flower Shop in Ubly. They eventually opened a second shop in Cass City, before retiring in 1997. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ubly. She loved playing Scrabble and cherished time with family. The loves of her life were her grandchildren, Jared and Kara. For the past 2 ½ years, her great grandson, Clayton James, put the twinkle back in her eye. We will miss her quiet wit, charm and love. Karen and her family wish to say thank you to all the staff at Meadow Lane, where Charlene resided for many years for caring for, loving her and being her extended family when we could not be there. Thank You.

James Fligger, age 81, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at his home in Ubly. James was born March 5, 1937 in Verona Township, son of the late Alexander and Virginia (Grifka) Fligger. James served his country in the US Army. He worked as a self-employed electrician for many years and then worked for Cal Star in Arkansas for 12 years before retiring. He invented and manufactured Jiffy Fiber Tumbler. James enjoyed rebuilding classic cars, woodworking, dancing, bird watching and enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and playing with his dogs, Jasmin and Dottie.

Farver February 11, 1956 in Angola, Indiana. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. She loved being a wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, baking and her cats.

Mrs. Lola Marie Brown, 76 of Ubly passed away Friday, December 7th, 2018, at her residence with her family at her side. Lola was born on March 3, 1942 in Marlette to the late Donovan and Edna (O’Connell) Campbell. She married Bruce Earl Brown of Snover on December 16th, 1960. She graduated from Sandusky High School and then Grace Eastern MI College of commerce with a degree in business. Lola worked for Snover Hardware and did secretarial work for a company she and Bruce had buying green stock for Vlassic Pickle Co. of Imlay City. They lived in Snover until 1965 when they moved to Ubly. They owned the Brown House restaurant in Ubly and her ribs had people lined up at the door every Sunday for brunch. She and Bruce owned and operated Huron Vending, Huron Ice, Mid-Michigan Ice, and the Ubly Mini Storage, and she was an EMT for Bingham Township Ambulance for approximately 25 years. Lola was a member of Ubly Lions Club, Community Club, the Historical Society, Ubly Village Council, Thumb Veterans Auxiliary and the secretary for The Wildwood Flowers for World Travel and Mind Enrichment. She was also in all the 1970’s productions of the Alabama Jubilee. Lola was an active member of the Ubly United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She started the first joint Ubly Community Vacation Bible School in 1978 between the Ubly United Methodist Church, the First Presbyterian Church of Ubly, and St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. For approximately 40 years Lola continued her dedication to planning and organizing the annual Vacation Bible School program.

Martin Joseph Osantoski, age 93, of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Courtney Manor Nursing Facility in Bad Axe. Martin was born October 28, 1925 in Parisville, son of the late Peter and Rose (Czewski) Osantowski. He attended St. Mary Catholic School in Parisville until sixth grade. He married Frances Shubert on June 22, 1957. She preceded him in death on February 15, 1993. Martin then married Beatrice Pionk on February 13, 1999. Martin worked for Hudson Motor as a millright from 1944 – 1952. He was inducted into the US Army July 18, 1952 and served until he was Honorably Discharged from the Army of the United States on April 21, 1954, earning a Korean Service Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars, a National Defense Service Medal and a United Nations Service Medal. Martin then worked at Active Industries in Sebewaing, MI in machine repair until he retired. He was a member of the Parisville VFW Post 5740 and enjoyed woodworking and visiting at the senior center.

Ricky graduated from Laker High School and worked for Cottick Radiator in Bad Axe and Five Star Dairy in Port Hope. Ricky enjoyed working on cars and his cats Sadie and Rufus. He was a private person and had a fond love for his family.
