The funeral will be held 11 AM Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church, 7120 Geiger Road, Pigeon. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday, August 13 from 6 to 8 PM; and on Tuesday, August 14 from 10 AM until time of service. Champagne Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Family of the Deceased

In addition to his wife, Clayton is survived by his children, Cherie (Larry)Yoder of Sherwood , Jerry (Tammy) Maust of Pigeon, Lynette (Darrel)Yoder, of Bay Port, Debby (Barry) Graber of Kalona, IA, and Lori (Lester) Beachy of Kokomo, IN ; 27 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Thelma's family including her two children, Leon (Marj) Hershberger and Evie ( Myron) Showalter; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Clayton was preceded in death by his four brothers, Arthur, Earl, Edgar, and Wilbur Maust; his four sisters, Alta Swartzendruber, Doris Basinger, Fern Brunk, and Josephine Musser; and granddaughter, Katie Yoder.

Biography

Clayton Ray Maust, 88, a resident of Harrisonburg , Virginia , passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Clayton was born February 27, 1930, in Bay Port , son of the late Richard and Elizabeth (Gunden) Maust. On April 20, 1951, he married Berniece Albrecht, also from Bay Port , who passed away January 7, 1987. Clayton and Berniece were active members of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church where they taught Sunday school and served as youth sponsors for many years. In his early years, Clayton owned Huron County Hatchery where he employed young men who caught chickens and remember him as kind and caring. He later was employed at Active Feed Company, regularly hauling eggs to Buffalo , New York , and making friends along the way. Clayton never knew a stranger. Clayton will long be remembered for his signature bass voice. He began singing in quartets as a young man. For 30 years sang with the former Gospel Messengers Quartet. He also sang with the Pigeon Men’s Chorus and the Rockingham Male Chorus. After his marriage to Thelma H. Martin Hershberger on January 14, 1989, Clayton moved to Harrisonburg , Virginia , and began to thoroughly enjoy his retirement. He frequently drove tour bus. He and Thelma traveled extensively and made family time their greatest priority.
