Biography

Wilma J. Braun, 85, of Harbor Beach, passed away Wednesday morning, February 24, 2021, in McLaren Hospital, Port Huron, following a short battle with cancer. She was born July 12, 1935, in Harbor Beach, daughter of Charles and Martha (Whipping) Weber. She and Robert Braun were married Aug. 9, 1958, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death March 8, 2004. Wilma attended Wade country school and graduated from Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic High School in 1953. She attended Central Michigan State University for two years and earned her teaching certificate. From there she taught two years at Sparlingville in Kimball Township near Port Huron. Wilma worked with Bob on the family farm, doing cattle chores, driving tractor, and doing every other farm duty except milking cows, because she knew if she learned how to milk cows, she would have to milk the cows. She also loved mowing the lawn and she did so until this past Fall. Wilma was an active member of the Harbor Beach Retirees and the Port Hope Retirees, acting as secretary for many, many years. She was an avid card player, especially enjoying euchre, pinochle, bridge and Liverpool Rummy. She was a past member of the Kings & Queens bowling league for more than 40 years, the Sundowners Farm Bureau club, the Tip of the Thumb Square Dancing group, and various card clubs. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, volunteered as a greeter, and was involved in their Altar Society activities years ago. She and Bob also liked to travel, having been to Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, California, and many other states. Wilma enjoyed many hobbies. She especially loved sewing and would say she needed to sew everyday if only for 15 minutes. Through the years she sewed over100 quilt tops for the Lutheran ladies and made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. Her most recent love for sewing involved making dresses for St Agatha Catholic Church of Gagetown for girls in Guatemala. At last count she had completed 763 dresses, with many more at home not yet finished. Her family often commented that those girls were blessed with the best dresses, made with the joy and love of sewing. Wilma also enjoyed crocheting afghans for her children and grandchildren and she liked to cook, bake, knit, craft, garden and bird watch.
