Huron County Recall Effort Encounters Procedural Setback

A recall effort targeting Huron County Commissioner Steve Vaughan has hit a procedural setback, and organizers will have to collect signatures again.
More than 500 signatures were submitted in July, but the petition was ruled insufficient after circulator sheets were incorrectly labeled as Colfax Township. Vaughan's district also includes Chandler, Meade, and Oliver townships, as well as the Village of Elkton. Signatures from voters outside the location identified on the petition sheets could not be counted.
The recall petition, filed by Colfax Township resident Lily Dropiewski, stems from Vaughan's vote involving a county renewable energy zoning ordinance and a 15,000-acre limit for utility-scale solar development.
Organizers need at least 453 valid signatures from registered voters in District 4. Under Michigan law, that number represents 25% of the votes cast for governor in the district during the most recent gubernatorial election.
The approved petition language remains valid for 180 days, giving organizers until December 13 to recirculate petitions. However, signatures more than 60 days old at the time of filing cannot be counted.
With the deadline for the November ballot already passed, a successful recall petition would instead lead to a special election in May.
