MDARD Finds One Heard Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Michigan

Michigan agriculture officials are investigating two more cases of bovine tuberculosis involving cattle herds in Iosco County.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says one herd was discovered while tracing animals connected to a previously infected herd. The second was identified through routine whole-herd surveillance testing.
The latest findings follow Iosco County's first confirmed infected cattle herd, discovered in May. That case prompted expanded cattle testing in parts of Iosco, Arenac and Ogemaw counties.
Bovine TB is a bacterial disease capable of infecting mammals, including cattle, deer and humans. In Michigan, the disease remains established in portions of the northeastern Lower Peninsula's wild white-tailed deer population and can spread between deer and cattle.
State officials are now tracing animal movements connected to the newly affected herds. Whole-genome sequencing will also be used to help determine the source of infection.
Michigan wildlife officials are encouraging hunters in Iosco and other northeastern Lower Peninsula counties to submit harvested deer for TB testing.
