MDHHS Takes New Steps To Strengthening Suicide Prevention Efforts

Michigan health officials are outlining new steps aimed at strengthening suicide prevention efforts across the state.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has released recommendations from the Michigan Suicide Prevention Council, including calls for sustained state funding and additional suicide-prevention education for certain licensed professionals.
The issue remains a significant public health concern. MDHHS reports 1,443 Michigan residents died by suicide in 2024, and suicide was the second-leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 34.
The council brings together representatives from health care, education, law enforcement, tribal communities, veterans services and other organizations. Its work supports Michigan's statewide suicide prevention plan covering 2024 through 2027.
The council itself received $125,000 in state funding for the current fiscal year to coordinate prevention efforts, develop educational materials and advise the state on funding and policy priorities.
