Michigan's Unemployment Rate Inches Upward For August

Michigan's unemployment rate moved back up to five percent in August, while the number of people participating in the state's workforce continued to decline.
New state data show employment fell by about 25,000 people last month. The number classified as unemployed held steady at 241,000, leaving Michigan's overall labor force 25,000 smaller than in July.
The 5% unemployment rate compares with 4.9% in July and a national August rate of 4.1%.
Michigan also lost about 2,000 payroll jobs during August, with manufacturing posting the largest monthly decline. That ended five consecutive months of statewide payroll job growth.
Despite the monthly setback, Michigan had about 8,000 more payroll jobs than a year earlier. Government and private education and health services recorded the largest year-over-year gains, while professional and business services posted the largest decline.
