A Huron County man is avoiding a lengthy jail sentence after pleading guilty to his third operating while intoxicated charge. Andrew Benjamin Vaerten appeared for sentencing before the court, represented by attorney Michael A. Murawski , with prosecutor Timothy J. Rutkowski representing the state.
Vaerten, 34, recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.217 during the incident.
His record includes previous drinking and driving convictions dating back to 2010 and 2011.
The court ordered three years of probation and 180 days in the county jail. Vaerten will serve only one day, with the remaining 179 days held in abeyance, provided he successfully completes the Thumb Regional Sobriety Court program.
The sentence also mandates 480 hours of community service, along with various fines and court costs.
The court emphasized that the ruling aims to prioritize the defendant's reformation and public safety.
