HURON COUNTY - Two people were safely rescued Saturday afternoon after separate small sailboats encountered trouble on Lake Huron near Oak Beach in Hume Township.
Authorities say Huron Central Dispatch received the report just after 4 p.m. involving an out of county father and son, each sailing alone in vessels measuring less than 12 feet. Emergency crews from the Huron County Sheriff's Office, Caseville Fire Department, Port Austin Fire Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene.
The son reached shore with assistance from nearby boaters. About an hour later, firefighters aboard the Caseville fireboat located the father in the water and brought him safely back to land, where he was treated by Thumb EMS for exposure.
Sheriff Kelly Hanson says the outcome could have been far worse and noted that both individuals were wearing life jackets, a factor credited with helping prevent tragedy.
Officials are also reminding boaters that strong southerly winds can create hazardous conditions along Huron County's northern shoreline, with increasing waves and offshore currents capable of overwhelming small sailboats, kayaks, and other lightweight watercraft. Water temperatures remain in the upper 60s, adding to the risk of exposure during emergencies.
