Construction is moving forward on Thumb Area Transit's long-awaited new operations and maintenance facility in Huron County. The walls are going up and construction is progressing along as anticipated.
According to transit officials, the project is now in the early stages of construction, with completion currently targeted for March of 2027. The new complex is expected to cost approximately $32 million and will replace the agency's aging headquarters, which has become too small to accommodate its growing fleet and staff.
The facility is being designed to support modern public transportation needs, including expanded maintenance capabilities and infrastructure for future low- and zero-emission vehicles. State and federal funding have helped make the project possible, including a $10 million state investment announced in 2024.
Thumb Area Transit has served Huron County residents since 1981, providing transportation for work, medical appointments, shopping, and other essential travel throughout the region. Officials say the new headquarters will position the agency to better serve riders for decades to come while supporting continued fleet modernization and operational efficiency.
Construction is expected to continue through the coming months, with the new facility anticipated to open in early 2027.
