Michigan lawmakers have taken another step toward expanding voting protections after the state Senate approved a package of bills known as the Michigan Voting Rights Act.

The legislation is designed to strengthen safeguards against voter suppression and discrimination and now moves to the Michigan House for consideration.

Following the vote, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson praised the Senate's action and called on House lawmakers to advance the measure to the governor's desk, saying the proposal would reinforce voting rights protections for residents across the state.
