Ubly, MI - A series of events unfolded in downtown Ubly this morning, October 28, culminating in a pickup truck striking the local preschool building. Remarkably, all children and staff are safe, and the building has been declared structurally sound.
The incident began at approximately 10:43 a.m. when Ubly Police, Bingham Township Fire, and Central Huron Ambulance responded to a call near the Ubly Preschool.
Preliminary investigation by the Ubly Police Department indicates the crash originated at the intersection of Washington Street and Main Street. A Harbor Beach woman driving west on Main Street reportedly failed to yield the right-of-way to an Ubly woman heading south on Washington Street, resulting in a collision.
The impact spun the Ubly woman's vehicle 180 degrees. Shaken by the crash, the driver mistakenly hit the accelerator and drove north on Washington Street.
The vehicle then veered off the road to the east, striking a speed limit sign and several mailboxes. It briefly re-entered the road before traveling across Washington Street, leaving the roadway on the west side.
The truck, identified as a 2000 Chevy S-10, first destroyed a porch at a building used by Ubly Schools, continued northwest, and finally struck the south corner of the Ubly Preschool Building, which is shared with a 3-year-olds classroom, before coming to rest.
Superintendent Troy Reehl quickly communicated the incident to the community, confirming the safety of all students.
"I am relieved to report that all children are safe, and none were harmed during this event. At the time, the children were in line preparing to come inside and were not impacted by the accident," Reehl stated in an update.
School staff and officers immediately checked on the students. Reehl later updated the community that Booms Construction had assessed the damage, confirming the building is structurally sound.
Both drivers were checked by emergency personnel at the scene and refused further medical treatment.
The Ubly Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation and was assisted by the Bingham Township Fire Department, Central Huron Ambulance, and the Huron County Sheriff Department Deputies.
