Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 am Thursday, November 21 at St. John Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Ubly. Rev. Nate Harburg, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Ignatius Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly on Wednesday from 12:00-7:00 pm and Thursday from 9:00-10:00 am. There will be a rosary recited Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 pm by Mr. Alger Lemke at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the 3rd Order of St. Francis in Leonard’s memory. Leonard is survived by his three children, Julie Ann (Mathew) Parsons of St. Clair Shores, Joseph Popiel of Sterling Heights, Michael (Heather) Popiel of Ruth; five grandchildren, Justin, Autumn Rose, Leah Rain and Nolan Parsons, Myles Popiel; one sister, Elizabeth Reynolds; one brother-in-law, Stanley Wiercioch. He was preceded in death by one sister, Gail Wiercioch; one brother-in-law, Walter Reynolds.
Mr. Leonard Joseph Popiel, 73 of Ubly passed away Thursday, November 14, 2019 surrounded by his family while under the care of United Hospice Service of Marlette. Leonard was born on July 14, 1946 in Detroit to the late Joseph and Sophie (Zawacki) Popiel. He married Carol Ann Jachcik on September 25, 1970 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hamtramck. She preceded him in death on November 12, 2019. Leonard was a graduate of Pershing High School. He served in the US Navy from 1965-1969. He then became employed with Peschke and drove truck for them from 1970-1981. He then started working at Saratoga Hospital in their maintenance department. When Leonard and Carol Ann moved to Bad Axe in 1994, he started at Gemini Plastics and worked there until he retired in 2006. He was a parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Ubly. Leonard enjoyed woodworking Tiger baseball and other sports, playing softball, bowling and fishing.
