Biography

Retired Judge, John T. Schubel of Port Hope, Michigan, died at the age of 88 on December 14, 2022. He was born July 24, 1934 at Hubbard Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe, Michigan, the son of Ted H. and Alberta Schubel. He graduated from Port Austin High School in 1951, attended Alma College, received his bachelor’s degree from the Detroit Institute of Technology, and his law degree from the Detroit College of Law. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was chief battalion clerk and special court-martial reporter for the 554 Engineer Battalion Construction. He was elected Huron County Prosecuting Attorney in 1962 and served in that capacity until 1969 when he was elected to the bench in the newly created District Court. He served as district judge until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure he was assigned by the Michigan Supreme Court to serve on the Wayne County Circuit Court bench and in other district courts in the state. He was a former treasurer of Pointe Aux Barques Township and was a government approval agent for the Huron County Draft Board. For many years he filled various church pulpits as a lay speaker. He was an avid walker, golfer and reader of Luke Short westerns. As a boy growing up at Pointe Aux Barques, he was a caddy at the golf course and carried the bag of poet Edgar A. Guest and Cardinal Mooney. The highlight of his caddying career was when he twice carried the bag of two-time Masters champion Horton Smith.
