Jean Ruppel Krohn of Bad Axe passed away suddenly on Friday, March 20, 2026, while spending time at her winter home in Ave Maria, Florida. Jean was born June 4, 1943, in Harbor Beach, Michigan to George and Irene (Winkel) Layer. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. She graduated from Harbor Beach High School before spendingmost of career working at the Huron Memorial Hospital. On July 7, 2023, she married the love of her life, James Krohn, and they were together for more than 25 years. Together they blended their families, Maureen (Gerry Cook) Mausolf, Angie Souva, James (Erika) Krohn, and Kevin Krohn. She gladly stepped into the role of the family matriarch when she first became a grandmother more than 40 years ago and enjoyed hosting family for holidays, spontaneous picnics and dinners, and numerous sleepovers for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family and friends, tending to her garden, spending time near her pond at her Bad Axe home or by her pool in her Naples, Florida home. She enjoyed games – especially puzzles, rummikub, and bocce ball, playing cards, andgolfing. She loved antiquing and finding a good bargain at a garage sale, characteristics she passed on to children and grandchildren. She enjoyed entertaining at her pond at her home in Bad Axe and hosting events like James’s class reunions, neighbor parties, and even some of her grandchildrens’ wedding rehearsal dinners. She had a heart of gold and was known for taking care of people and looking out for others. She was quick to share some of her homemade jam made with raspberries from her garden or bake someone a pie when they needed a pick-me-up. She also had a soft spot for animals. The neighborhood cats always knew where to find her and that she would keep them fed. When a group of newborn kittens were left without parents, she bottle fed them until a shelter was able to take them in.
