Biography

Duane “Dewey” Schave of Port Hope died peacefully at his home on Friday, July 31, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Dewey was born on April 6, 1960 to Herbert and Ida Schave. Duane attended Port Hope Community School. He began his career at Carlson-Schave Steel Fabricators in Warren; he then moved back to the area where he worked at Midwest Rubber in Deckerville; he later became self-employed, which he continued until his passing. Duane enjoyed going to estate sales, adding to his collection of “treasures”. He had a passion for model T cars, trains and John Deere tractors; his skill in tinkering with anything that had a motor connected him to many fellow enthusiasts. Those who knew Duane will fondly remember his friendliness. Whether it was the familiar sound of his car horn beeping, or his welcoming wave, Duane had a gift for making connections. As the unofficial ambassador of Portland Avenue, he embraced new neighbors, turning strangers into friends. He was also known for volunteering at the annual Port Hope 4th of July celebration at the school grounds for the tractor pull.
