Visitation for Larry Smith will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe from 11:00am-2pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at MacAlpine Funeral Home at 2:00, with Cara Dorsch officiating. Memorials may be offered to Thumb Animal Shelter in Elkton. Along with his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his sister-in-law Judy Smith, his step-son Bryan Smith. Larry is survived by his son Michael P. (Kimberly Clark) Smith of Filion; daughter Carrie (Eric) Koglin of Port Hope; wife Elizabeth Smith of Bad Axe; step-sons Dennis (Rachel) Smith of Grand Blanc, Michael D. Smith of Harbor Beach; brothers Robert Smith of Kingston, Mark Smith of Pigeon, Loy (Debra) Smith of Florida; grandchildren Sean (Samantha), Caleb (Kaylynn), Bentley, Charlotte, Ethan, Chandler, Berkleigh; two great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Biography

Lawrence (Larry) D. Smith, age 74, of Bad Axe, passed away suddenly on Friday, August 28, 2026 at his home. Larry was born in Bad Axe to the late Caroline and Arthur Smith on September 4, 1951. Larry worked for Thumb Area Transit as a bus driver for 15 years and Thumb Industries for several years before retiring. In his younger years, Larry spent time helping with the building of bridges in Pennsylvania. Throughout all of his years, he most enjoyed his time outdoors and exploring. He was an avid fisherman and loved camping, taking roads least traveled, just to see what sights could be seen. He instilled his love for fishing and camping in his children and grandchildren. He was a big fan of blues music and attending blues festivals, and loved to tell you of his hate of country music. Larry enjoyed telling stories of things, supernatural or other to friends and family and had a large collection of books of “Mysteries of the Unknown” and “The Library of Curious and Unusual Facts.”
