Museum Honors Historic Lighthouse Keeper

The first female lighthouse keeper in Michigan was remembered July 18 during a brief ceremony dedicating a barn quilt in her honor.
Representatives from the Pointe aux Barques Maritime Museum, the Port Hope Area Historical Society, and the community gathered at the Port Hope Lumberyard Museum to dedicate the quilt named "Catharine's Guiding Light."
Marolyn Becker of the maritime museum told the group that Catharine Shook was the keeper at the Pointe aux Barques lighthouse from 1849 to 1851. She took the role after the light's first keeper - (her husband, Peter Shook) - drowned.
The barn quilt was designed and painted by volunteers with the historical society's Barn Quilt Project committee.
"Catharine's Guiding Light" will be on display Aug. 1 at the Pointe aux Barques museum and lighthouse during the Heritage Festival. The quilt then will get it's permanent home on the wall of the Lumberyard Museum.
