Michigan Has Reached A Milestone In Breast Cancer Surgery

Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw says it has completed the state's first endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy. The procedure was performed by Dr. Sussan Bays, medical director of Covenant Cancer Care Center and Covenant Breast Health Center, expanding access to an advanced surgical option for patients across the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Unlike a traditional nipple-sparing mastectomy, the endoscopic technique uses a miniature camera and specialized instruments to remove breast tissue through small, strategically placed incisions, often concealed near the underarm. The approach preserves the nipple, areola and surrounding skin while reducing the size of the surgical incision.
The operation was carried out by a multidisciplinary team. After the breast tissue was removed, plastic surgeon Dr. George Malliaras completed the reconstructive portion of the procedure.
Hospital officials say the minimally invasive technique may be appropriate for some patients with early-stage breast cancer, as well as individuals considering preventive surgery because of an elevated risk of developing the disease. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account tumor location, overall health and each patient's treatment plan.
Covenant HealthCare says offering the procedure locally allows eligible patients to receive advanced breast cancer care closer to home and their established medical support network.
