Action has been taken regarding the number of crashes on roads in Tuscola County and the lack of action by the county's road commission board.
The Tuscola County Board of Commissioners directed the road commission to create rumble strips and to place flashing lights on five intersections where numerous crashes have happened.
That action is to be done on five intersections:
Hurds Corner and Deckerville roads.
Irish and Birch Run roads.
Birch Run Road and M-15.
South Hurds Corner and East Bevans roads.
Hurds Corner Road and M-46.
Fairgrove and Vassar roads.
The action that was taken was prompted by the Putman family who had three family members killed and three others injured in an accident at Hurds Corner and Deckerville road.
The Fairgrove and Vassar intersection was included because six people were killed there in a previous crash.
Even though each of those intersections are clearly marked, crashes continue to happen.
Rumble strips and lights would be an added sensory notice at those intersections to stop.
The Putmans researched the cost of rumble strips and flashing lights at stop signs. They determined the cost to do that is minimal.
The Putmans and the townships where those dangerous intersections are have offered to cover the cost of those additional safety measures.
After action for additional highway safety was approved, commissioners also directed that a road commission member is to report to them at least once a month to give a report as a way to do oversight.
The county commissioners decided to do that instead of taking action to eliminate the road board which has been talked about and considered for the last few months as numerous complaints about the road board's inaction and indifference to correspondence and concerns have grown.
